The emergence of Knicks’ Julius Randle as an All-Star and potential All-NBA selection has taken the league completely by storm, even amongst his own fan base.

In fact, only a few months ago it was rare to find a Knicks fan who didn’t want Randle shipped out of town. However, after watching Randle represent the New York Knicks in both the All-Star Game and Skills Challenge, it is safe to say that he has turned his doubters into believers.

Halfway through his seventh season Randle has transformed his game and completely shifted the narrative around himself as a player and leader. He has safely cemented himself as a foundational piece in the Knicks’ future through his on and off-the-court leadership. This unexpected development has forced many Knicks fans to dish out apologies.

After all, a lot of Randle slander had piled up on Knicks twitter over the months leading into this season. However, the latest and most entertaining apology to Randle was issued via FaceTime by pop-culture critic and Knicks fan Joe Budden on his podcast this past week.

All-Star Energy

As soon as Randle answered the call from Jamil “Mal” Clary, the crew joked that he sounded different because of his All-Star energy. They congratulated Randle on his latest achievement, praised him for the remarkable development of his game and admired the revitalization of the Knicks organization. Amongst the praise, Randle was sure to point out the amazing job that head coach Tom Thibodeau has done as well. The two of them have clearly built a strong rapport. Randle also praised rookie guard Immanuel Quickley. He said Quicks fearlessness, preparation, work ethic and confidence is what has brought him success early in his NBA career.

‘This ain’t meant for everybody’

Budden then went on to ask Randle if he felt any obligation to recruit key players to New York amidst their recent success. Randle responded with a very telling tidbit about the culture the Knicks are building.

“Absolutely, but it has to be the right fit,” he said. “Everything we’re doing now is different and dudes gotta be willing to buy in to what we’re doing. This ain’t meant for everybody.” This response alludes to the hard working, unselfish and motivated nature that Thibs’ and company have instilled in these new look Knicks.

Even in such a comedic setting, it is evident that the partnership of Julius and coach Thibs’ has become the backbone of this team and the new culture that continues to grow in the Mecca.
