Argentine guard Luca Vildoza is set to miss the remaining Summer League games with an ankle injury. The guard who only recently turned 26 is reported to have fluid in his right ankle.
Vildoza appeared in the Knicks’ first two Summer League games, the first was a loss to the Toronto Raptors and the second a win over the Indiana Pacers. Despite this, he failed to register any points in his twelve minutes on the court. He did provide 3 assists in his limited minutes, though, showcasing his passing ability. Vildoza arrived in Las Vegas after the Olympics where he averaged 7 points and 3 assists as Argentina fell in a quarter final loss to Australia.
He recently spoke to CP The Fanchise of KFTV where he outlined his hopes for his future with the Knicks, admitting that the Argentine team had a disappointing Olympics and hopes his time with the Knicks will be better. Furthermore, Vildoza’s contract is currently non-guaranteed for approximately $3.3M. It doesn’t become fully guaranteed until the opening night of the season.
Will we see Vildoza in Preseason?
On the other hand, Vildoza is expected to be available for the start of the preseason. He hopes to show his NBA ability and stake his claim for a place in the Knicks’ guard rotation. The rotation has gotten much tougher to break into with the return of Derrick Rose and the free-agent acquisitions of Evan Fournier and New York native, Kemba Walker.
Luca won the Liga ACB with Baskonia in 2020 and was also named Liga ACB MVP. He averaged 10.9 points along with 3.7 assists, 1.7 rebounds and 1.6 steals in his best season in Europe. He obviously has the talent, but with the apparent jet lag and now his ankle injury his window to showcase it to the Knicks may be closing.
